When should you retire your trusty old harness?

As with most things in life all good things come to an end, including the trusty old harness, prusik loop and rope that you have been using since the dawn of time!

How long can ‘soft’ products be kept in service? This can be confusing and generally depends on the manufacturer, the amount and type of use, along with how the item has been maintained and the conditions in which the item has been stored.

The service life for items can vary from anything from 2 to 10 years depending on the manufacturer and when the was first put into service.

Each manufacturer will provide details on their individual products along with advice for storage and maintenance for prolonging the life of individual items.

Inspections

All equipment will need to be inspected prior to each use and an inspection regime needs to be put in place.

Periodic inspections

HSE guidelines are that all equipment that is used for lifting a person is subject to a minimum 6 monthly inspection or sooner if deemed so by the competent person.

Is it worth the risk?

With any item of PPE if you have any doubts about the condition of the item then it will need to be removed from service and disposed of.

The LOLER regulations apply to employers, employees and those who are self-employed. As an employer who employs subcontractors are you aware that sub-contractors should be

“treated as their employees for health and safety purposes. You should therefore take appropriate action to protect them.”
