Is your tool box fully up to date?
If you are still constantly using double rope technique for every single job then your tool box needs updating!
Traditional climbing techniques have been around for some time and in some cases the adage “why repair what does not need fixing” is a good one to stick by.
However some things do move on and can be improved upon as is the case with climbing techniques and the developments in climbing equipment.
With the developments in SRT, Single/static/stationary Rope Technique, this is very much the case in hand!
Each climb needs to be evaluated individually as to the most suitable access method and you are not necessarily going to be using SRT for every single climb – as with all jobs you are going to evaluate the best, safest and the most efficient way to complete it!
Having just taken part in the Introduction to SRT hosted by Sorbus International and run by the fantastic pairing of Ben ‘Minty’ Rose and Geoff Pugsley this is a tool that every discerning climber needs in their tool box!
Starting off with setting up the systems and line in the show room of Sorbus in Frome Ben & Geoff demonstrated the use of the hitch system utilising the ISC rope wrench along with the DMM hitch climber, the CT Climb quick step foot ascender along with the Stein knee ascent system and foot loop and the alternatives that can be used including the Stein chest harness. 
We then moved on to the amazing location of Longleat Forestry Estate to scale some formidable Beech trees and enjoy the packed lunch picnic that was provided by Sorbus. Once on-site ropes were installed, and Ben & Geoff demonstrated base anchors and the use of the Alpine butterfly to assist in an aerial rescue situation.
The ease of access in to the canopy was a sheer revelation. SRT is a technique that I wish I had utilised a long time ago! The session was completed with a redirects and retrievable canopy anchors.
With their years of SRT experience Ben and Geoff’s instructions were clear, and all questions were answered with ease! And we managed to keep dry!!
